Lol, financially viable. Keep in mind this is Guild Wars, and the only reason we're going to GW2 instead of Utopia is because the current business plan isn't financially viable.

Soulkeeper Axe
Urgoz's Longbow

Darkwing Shortbow

It's things like this that really kill me, personally. Why are these items all listed in the .dat if only a small portion of them were actually implemented? And why are they listed together if they weren't released together?
IIRC, the Canthan Hand Axe and the Jade Sword were in a completely different update than the Totem Axe... and the Totem Axe was released at the same time as a variety of Green fans, but none of them are called the Fan of Sighs. As for the "[proper]The Ugly Stick", it could be that this was notation of the release of The Ugly Stick's skin as an independent drop, because I'm absolutely sure that the Green had a unique skin for a while before it spontaneously appeared as a drop otherwise some months after Factions release.
Also, the Darkwing bows here cannot be correspondent to Ironwing bows, because there are only Irongwing Flatbows and Ironwing Longbows, no Recurves, no Shorts, and no Horns.
Now it could be argued that this list is outdated and that the names were changed on skins that were later released, i.e. the Shard Hammer could have become The Icebreaker that we know today, but I would say that some of those skin names have 0% compatibility with any skins I can think of. What could a "Shadow Web Shield" even be?
All of that said, I would encourage everyone getting a raging boner over random shit they find in a game's .dat file to please take a breath, and not be disappointed if they never get anything they now are "expecting". The information about a Xunlai Market sounds like it has legitimate potential, as do a few other select things that have been suggested, but keep in mind that all of this information is coming from the same place as tiny pictures of Trogdor and strange composite pictures of some ANet employee's ranch house.
EDIT: I don't mean to be entirely discouraging. This thread is certainly interesting, and digging through the .dat has found things in the past (notably, of course, the Polar Bear). I would just hope to curtail a small percentage of the "wahhh where's the Xunlai Market??!!?" threads that will be showing up from now until forever.

It's proprietary format for storing anything, some can be scanned as text, others are encrypted, etc... There's not much to do with those, hex editor is your best bet.

Ah, cool, thanks for the info. Even less doable then I'd imagined. Move that from "Completely Unrealistic" to "Never".

Would be a good way to get PvE players over to the battle isles, I mean suppose after you post your stuff you get curious about the islands and explore and discover u enjoy pvp. :-)

Marketplace
A large market where people from different parts of the world come together to trade their goods.
You must own Guild Wars Prophecies to purchase this upgrade.
I would guess it is on the Battle Ilse due to the "from different parts of the world".

Ok, having tidily merged this, I can tell you that ol' DAT file has a ton of stuff, from last year, this year, four years ago, three offices prior, a staff member's moving sale, somebody's gerbil's birth announcement, and more. Nothing really to say. *shrug* -- Gaile 01:38, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, it doesn't make sense for them to knowingly leave traces of an auction house-like system in the DAT file (which they know people browse through all the time very well), considering the many discussions that have been had on the subject in the past.
If I were A-net and I weren't planning on adding an auction house-like system to GW1, I would make sure to not leave data like this lying around, as to not fire up the discussion (and inevitably, pissed off and disappointed people) yet again.
But then again, maybe they are that careless.

Found those many moons ago looking for new skins once the Jade Sword made it's appearance. I'm pretty sure though, that they are legacy names from the way-back machine.
Actually, if you notice, the names of all the weapons don't exist in the text file, so either I mis-coded something somewhere and missed them, or they are done server-side now. As to why some appear and not others might have to do with when they were coded or else whether they are available as bonus items or something... I'm not quite sure.

Most people use the GWdatbrowser... maybe they should put the #ID of the item that had them... everyone should put the #IDs...

ID numbers differ from installation to installation. Someone who began at NF and went back to buy Factions and then Prophecies will have a wildly different dat than someone who bought only the Prophecies + EotN combo. Yes, even after imaging.

I'm not asking how to navigate the GWdatbrowser or how to look at the pics, I know how to do that, but people post random strings that they happen to find that I have no clue where they found them. None of them have posted how they find them, but they just post them, and is in fact most of the basis of the existence of the Marketplace. I just want to see it for myself.
And btw, instead of being a jerk, if someone did post how to find it, you could have just said so.
EDIT: After a quick runthrough of the thread, I didn't see anything that answers my question (considering that I have been reading this thread somewhat regularly, I didn't think I would find anything...)
|
My dat's different than your dat, anyway. I can't tell you where I found it because of that simple fact. If you -image after every patch, and have been doing so since about Eye of the North's release, you should find mention of certain event quests and marketplace strings in a bunch of "unknown" text files at the end.
Burden of proof's on you if you know how to do it all already. Because I might have changed stuff, y'know. I will tell the other people how I found the stuff.
Method of finding stuff:- Open GWDatBrowser and let it process your dat.
- Sort by type or by ID# (whatever pushes your buttons). You will be most interested in anything not an FFNA, most likely, until someone figures out how those work.
- Select a file of interest
- Extract it by right-clicking and dumping it where you please. You'll have to save "Unknowns" as RAWs because the filetype is, well, unknown
If it's an "unknown" text file, e.g., for skill descriptions, it's quite well and possible to read it in GWDatBrowser. But it's easier on the eyes to clean them up.- Rename the .raw to .txt
- Get a hex editor and open the txt file. This is the same view as GWDatBrowser, except you can actually change stuff.
- Notice that between every letter in the string, there's a null character. Replace all hex strings of "00" to (blank) to get rid of them.
- Now, everything is jumbled up. But hope's not lost. Replace all hex "10" with "0D" to put line breaks in with the stuff. You end up with something that looks like this - it's easily readable by you and your favorite text editor:
(Click to enlarge. I use a more up-to-date version of GWDatBrowser personally, but it's not in English.)

I agree with Kerwyn. Start comparing your preupdate to postupdate .dats and tell us what is new. There were definately some stealth updates. Hopefully it wasn't just all online store changes.
